Gone are the days when software outsourcing simply meant that a client in US gives an order to the vendor in India, who in turn uses technology to create software solutions for the client. With increasing competition and greater client expectations, global IT players and the big names in the Indian outsourcing industry are rearing to go the extra mile to satisfy customers. Many firms are offering several value-added solutions that enhance the entire outsourcing experience and improve the client’s business. In fact, most firms are focusing on providing business-cum-technology solutions to clients in order stay ahead in today’s competitive market.
In the recently held NASSCOM India Leadership Forum 2010, top IT companies like IBM and Accenture touched on this new 3600 approach to the Indian IT industry. These companies are focusing on adding strong analytics and consulting capabilities to their offerings out of India. Accenture India is looking at hiring top-quality talent from high-end B-schools in India to strengthen its analytics skill-sets. IBM will also be setting up a business analytics and optimization centre in Bangalore to focus on providing analytics and business transformation consulting in four of its verticals banking, telecom, healthcare and retail.
So, why should the Indian IT industry shift focus to a business-cum-tech driven delivery model? There are two primary reasons:
- Customer’s demands are no longer restricted to tech-driven solutions. Increasingly global customers are looking for outsourcing partners who can tell them how technology can help them improve performance and talk to them about ways to improve their business. So, if you want the customer to be happy, you need to deliver more value. You need to look beyond technology and work towards improving your customer’s business capabilities. In short, deliver more to stay in the race.
- Second, India has a ready pool of analytics and business development professionals who are trained to deliver from the word go. India B-schools regularly churn out top-quality MBA professionals who can crunch data, look for patterns, analyze problem areas and find business insights that can help improve businesses. India is an enviable position when it comes to this veritable pool of talent and it only makes sense to utilize this valuable resource to retain existing clients and attract new clients from across the globe.
